Synopsis
This new collection features the first 3 novels of Dame Agatha Christie, The Mysterious Affair At Styles (1920), The Secret Adversary (1922), The Murder on the Links (1923) together with their original cover art.
The Mysterious Affair At Styles (1920) was written in the middle of the First World War, in 1916, and was Christie's first published novel. It introduced Hercule Poirot, Inspector (later, Chief Inspector) Japp, and Arthur Hastings. The character of Hercule Poirot was inspired by her experience working as a nurse, ministering to Belgian soldiers during the First World War, and by Belgian refugees who were living in Torquay.
The Secret Adversary (1922) is Agatha Christie's second published detective fiction novel. It introduces the characters of Tommy and Tuppence who feature in three other Christie novels and one collection of short stories; the five Tommy and Tuppence books span Agatha Christie's writing career. This new edition features the original dust jacket cover by Ernest Akers. Upon publication of the first book edition it was reviewed by The Times Literary Supplement in 1922, which described it as "a whirl of thrilling adventures" and that the characters of Tommy and Tuppence were "refreshingly original" and praised the fact that the "identity of the arch-criminal is cleverly concealed to the very end."
The Murder on the Links was first published in the US in 1923. In its review of the novel, The Times Literary Supplement compared the methods of detection of Poirot to Sherlock Holmes and concluded favorably that the book "provides the reader with an enthralling mystery of an unusual kind."
