The large, smoky glass door of the bar, highlighted in an array of neon lights, shook with a rhythmic thumping as she pulled on the stainless-steel handle. Elegantly etched in the glass was the name Tempest, a new club on the outskirts of the small, Bible-busting town’s outer limits.
While it raised the eyebrows, and ruffled the feathers of the entrenched local people, it brought a sense of excitement to this sleepy, small town. Tempest had become a booming business since it’d opened, which hadn’t been that long ago, so it still had that mysterious aura about it. While she didn’t mind different and new, Tempest was, quite possibly, something dangerous. One visit there and suddenly all inhibitions were set free… And with disastrous results in some cases. There was no doubt that an air of change wafted through the conversations of the locals and clergy alike.
Pious, North Carolina was on the outer edges of the Bible Belt but had kept the old traditions and antiquated ways of the religious norms closely aligned with the south. Under the stuffy religious veneer, Pious had a unique charm and a slight dusting of Wiccan residents scattered throughout. They coexisted over the years of peaceful existence, agreeing that the modern world had left any sense of virtue far behind.
Her parents had come to this town to provide a protected place for her. From the time Temperance was born, they had known that evil lurked in the world. Her mother knew that Pious, which was safeguarded by a local Coven and a powerful High Priestess, would be a safe haven for Temperance. For her to grow into the woman she needed to become. Her parents in turn would both do their parts on keeping the evils of the world out of their new home.
