Tracy Crosswhite is ordered by her Chief to re-open a twenty-five year old serial killer case when the local newspaper says it is going to run a series of articles for the anniversary. And the Chief also orders Captain Nolesco to work with Tracy knowing that since they don't like each other if they fail it will be on the both of them, and they will probably blame each other and take the fail. But to surprise of everyone the pair get along and help each other and have each others back. The ending was a surprise to all of them and gives the Chief another reason to put them both in what she feels is "their place" especially Tracy. Excellent addition to this series.

Attorney Keera Dugan is in a tough spot when the family law firm is hired to defend a man accused of murdering his wife. The forensic evidence is thin, but the prosecutor’s build a compelling circumstantial case. Keera’s father is a notorious defense attorney whose lifelong struggle with alcohol has dulled his skills and reputation, which leaves Keera on the hook as lead attorney. This story is many things: legal thriller, police procedural, and a look inside a dysfunctional family. Dugoni balances it all nicely, adding layers of intrigue that allow for many twists and turns. He uses chess as a tool in terms of it being a useful skill for an attorney, a way to misdirect the reader, and an avenue to brings family members together. If it sounds like a lot to take in and wade through, it is, yet it’s all done in a way that makes it accessible, makes sense, and adds to a satisfying conclusion that allows readers to pull all the puzzles pieces together. Her Deadly Game is yet another terrific novel by one of the most versatile authors writing today.

Attorney David Sloane is struggling to piece his life back together and cling to the fracturing relationship with his teenage son in the wake of some devastating personal losses, they join friends on a camping trip which goes awry when the boys land in court for a juvenile prank. Instead of the wrist slap they deserve, the boys are plunged into a nightmare when a corrupt local judge sentences them, quite literally in the dead of night, to a vicious “boot camp” in the wilderness. Not even Sloane’s legal experience is of value in this county, and he and his friend soon find themselves teetering on the wrong side of the law in their desperate attempt to save their boys. Dugoni’s usual crisp writing, an intricate but not confusing plot, compelling characters, and non-stop action make this a must read. I’ve enjoyed all the David Sloane novels, but this one really hit the mark for me.
