About the author

Katherena Vermette (she/her/hers) is a Michif (Red River Métis) novelist, poet, and writer for young readers from Treaty 1 territory in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her debut poetry collection, North End Love Songs, won the Governor General’s Literary Award, followed by nationally bestselling novels including The Break, The Strangers, and The Circle, all widely celebrated and award-winning.

Vermette also writes for younger audiences—her picture book The Girl and the Wolf and the graphic novel series A Girl Called Echo showcase her versatility and commitment to Métis storytelling.

She holds an MFA from the University of British Columbia and received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Manitoba. When not writing, she lives in Winnipeg with her human and furry family, in a “cranky old house” near the Red River—a place as full of stories as her work.
