Horace Newton Allen was an American doctor and missionary who served as a diplomat in Korea where he gathered his stories directly through the local Korean oral tradition. Korean Tales was one of the first stories to bring Korean, Chinese, and native legends to a Western audience.

James S. Gale, a Canadian missionary and scholar who lived in Korea, acquired his stories by finding an old original manuscript copy of tales written by Korean scholars Im Bang and Yi Ryuk.
