The Folk of the Air series is a YA fantasy trilogy that takes place in the Kingdom of Elhame in the land of Faerie. The story centers on the protagonist Jude Duarte, a human girl and the antagonist Cardan Greenbriar, a Prince of Faerie. If I can sum up the plot of this trilogy in one word that word would be "Power".

It is an electrifying dramatic tale of deceit, mystery, betrayal, murder, cruelty, and pure wickedness. You'll fall in love with the characters and hate them all at the same time. It will absolutely keep you spellbound. Caitlin Kelly does a fantastic job of interpreting and bringing this series to life. And that made all the difference to me.

This review is my second experience reading Holly Black. This book, written prior to the Folk of the Air series, is in the same world, but the characters are different. I absolutely loved the Folk of the Air series and so I really wanted to read more. The Darkest Part of the Forest is a Young Adult stand-alone book narrated by Lauren Fortgang. She also narrated the popular Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. It is an entertaining and dark read, and even though I enjoyed it, I didn’t LOVE it, like The Folk of the Air Series. There is a small smattering of swear words throughout, so parents of younger, well-read kids use discretion.

The Darkest Part of the Forest stars: siblings Hazel and Ben Evans who live in the mysterious town of Fairfold. Fairfold is different because, unlike other towns, the people of Fairfold have assimilated life sharing the town with the Fair Folk. That’s right, fairies. Life in Fairfold has gone on pretty uneventfully, except for the handful of occasions the Fair Folk cause mischief. Sometimes tourists go missing, but that is just life in Fairfold. The locals know the rules and if you’re a tourist, well, you better not act like one. Then one day, that all changed, and the town is in danger from secrets that could destroy its very existence.

This story is just the right amount of dark and creepy at times and the audio just heightens that feeling.

Enjoy!

I got this lovely book for Christmas. It is beautifully illustrated by Rovina Cai and a welcomed edition to my Folk of the Air collection of hardcovers. It is a fast and enjoyable read. Caitlin Kelly does another fantastic job of bringing the characters and story to life. I absolutely love her rendition of Cardan.

How The King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories is a novella that shares stories that took place during Cardan’s childhood, when he first met Jude, and also after the events of The Queen of Nothing from Cardan’s perspective. So, if you haven't read the Folk of the Air Series, then you should read those first, as this book will contain spoilers. (less)
This series was amazing. I have been a long time fan of Holly Black and this series was just another wonderful addition to her already amazing list of books.
