City on Fire is the first novel in a trilogy about war between the Irish and Italian Mafia in Rhode Island. The backstory is that the two mobs have coexisted over the years by divvying up various criminal enterprises between one another, but a new generation of leaders are supplanting the elders who established the peace. The younger generation is a little greedier and less inclined to take the long view of managing their business. Eventually, the families fall out over a woman and go to war. Winslow utilizes the character of Danny Ryan to explore the intersection of personal and crime family loyalty, and the cost each exerts on individuals. The story has good pace and highlights the folly of building a competitive worldview based on outdated concepts of family honor and pride, retribution, and violence as the means of settling disagreements. This is a dark, nihilistic story. At its heart, it is a contemporary retelling of Helen of Troy and the Trojan War.
