You’ll often find Daniel Silva’s name on the best seller charts, and his novel The Collector is a good example of why his novels are so popular. Silva brings back his seminal character from earlier novels, the inimitable spy Gabriel Allon, who comes out of retirement to track down a stolen painting. The chase leads him and his unlikely ally, a master thief, on a chase around Europe that lands them in the midst of today’s headlines. Silva’s writing style has an aesthetic that owes much to the masters of the spy thriller genre such as John LeCarre and Ken Follet. There are, of course, many more layers to the developing story as Gabriel unearths a dangerous conspiracy that has already left people dead and threatens to claim many more. Allon is an interesting character with unusual depth, and he’s ably supported by a cast of well-rounded, intriguing allies and foes. If you’re looking for an enjoyable spy thriller that chugs along at a good pace and delivers more than a few thrills and surprises, The Collector will prove a satisfying read.
