Holy heck! This was a crazy wild ride and I couldn’t read it fast enough. This is the first book by this author that I’ve read so I was pleased to find that the main characters were relatable and the storyline consumed my mind even when I wasn’t reading it. I was trying to connect the dots and predict the outcome along the way but when the twist and turns popped up I was gobsmacked. This was a heart pounding read that never slowed down. It is laced with thrills and danger along the way ratcheting up the intensity with each turn of the page. I will definitely be checking out Mr. Finlay’s other books.

Alex Finlay adds to an impressive string of first class thrillers with The Night Shift, a wildly entertaining story built upon a pair of nearly identical late night slaughters of ice cream store employees. The killings occur fifteen years apart, and each leaves a single survivor, who share a common memory of a whispered message from their unknown assailant. Finlay weaves the tale primarily through the eyes of three characters, two of whom are the survivors, with the other an appealing FBI agent who is determined to solve both crimes. Finlay’s characters are extremely well drawn, complete with layers of complexity that make them interesting and keep us fully invested in their plights. The well-crafted plot unspools smoothly, with enough twists and turns to keep us guessing right to the end. Finlay’s writing is tight and direct, and the buildup of tension through the final chapters will keep you on the edge of yours seat … or awake all night.
