Another murder in Bald Eagle Falls…

P. D. Workman delivers yet another unputdownable twisted murder mystery brimming with suspense, surprises, fabulous characters and relevant societal issues ranging from heartbreaking to utterly despicable. This author is gifted with a rare ability to deftly incorporate complex social concerns into a story in such a way as to enlighten, inform, and inspire the reader about the current problems pervasive in modern society without allowing those issues to cast an impenetrably dark pall over what is always a carefully-crafted, engaging, and highly enjoyable cozy mystery. In this story, the sudden and suspicious death of a highly successful yet much-disliked business magnate places Erin in the middle of another murder investigation. She knows her lemon meringue pies were not to blame, but getting to the bottom of this mystery is going to take her on a convoluted journey complicated by the sudden appearance of a secret admirer that may or may not have the clues that Erin needs. I recommend you turn off your phone (*gasp*) and curl up with this engrossing tale of murder, manipulation, cover-ups, pay-offs, and shady shenanigans. I can’t help but wonder what the author will cook up for Erin and her friends next.

Totally twisted!

In the two years Erin, our favorite gluten-free baker, has lived in Bald Eagle Falls she has worked very hard at being a good neighbor, a good businesswoman, and an upstanding member of the community. In this story we get a peek at what her life was like before inheriting Auntie Clem’s bakery. Her complicated background threatens to cause a bit of trouble for her when she stumbles across a dead body in the basement of a bookstore (yes, she does have a knack for finding corpses in unexpected places, doesn’t she?). Before the police can arrive, the body disappears but that won’t be the final curtain call for this corpse. If that sounds twisted, just wait until you read the rest of this story. It will keep you glued to the pages to find out what happens and how it all ties back to Erin and her mysterious past. I thought this story was a bit more tense than previous installments and I loved learning more about Erin. I won’t ‘waffle’ on my recommendation – I wholeheartedly recommend this story to anyone enjoying a good, twisty whodunnit.

More mystery in Bald Eagle Falls!

Bald Eagle Falls may be a small town but it certainly isn’t without its dark side. Erin Price, proprietor of the popular Auntie Clem’s Bakery where delicious gluten-free baked goods are served fresh from the oven daily, has been in more than her fair share of sticky situations (and I’m not talking about her baked goods). In this exciting and tension-filled installment, she is spread a bit thin being in charge of some home renovations for her vacationing elderly neighbor, Mrs. Peach, and being asked to cater a wedding reception for a friend with only a few days’ notice. How can she handle all these new responsibilities and run her bakery? If that sounds chaotic – just wait until a couple of dead bodies show up to complicate matters even further. I love the twists and turns this story takes as the plot unfolds, the tension is ever-escalating as one clue after another is dropped to keep you guessing, and the real nail-biting begins when Erin finds herself in imminent danger. Can Terry and K9 reach her in time? Does Willie know more than he is letting on? You’ll have to read it to find out what all your favorite characters are up to and how this mystery resolves. Enjoy!

Beavers get a bad rap…

Calgary’s only Métis homicide detective, Margie Patenaude, has developed quite the reputation for solving murders associated with the various parks located all around Calgary. When a body is found in a park, they call Parks Pat. This twisty mystery begins when Margie receives a phone call very early one morning directing her to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary where a body has been discovered. Upon her arrival at the scene she is informed by the uniformed officers already in attendance that it looks like a beaver attack. Well, you don’t hear that every day! Death investigations are never simple, though. While the victim was found underneath a tree that was obviously felled by beavers, the Medical Examiner soon rules the case a homicide. Margie now has a killer of the human variety to find, the beavers have been exonerated. I really enjoyed following her investigation as she examined each clue to come up with a suspect, but the really tough question in this case is how the victim was killed. After being told that the victim was an avid wildcrafter (forager), she enlists the help of her grandfather who happily shares his considerable wisdom about the various plants found in the sanctuary. As expected, I was thoroughly invested in this well-written police procedural involving relatable and believable characters, some of which seem like old friends at this point. With each story in this series I gain a further appreciation for the Indigenous cultures that have contributed so much to our society, but who remain overlooked, misunderstood, and underappreciated far too often. I applaud this author’s continued unrelenting efforts to shine a light on the vast diversity contributing to the intricate tapestry of mankind and to giving us a glimpse of the dizzying possibilities of our collective potential. If contemplative reflection isn’t your thing, just put your feet up and relax with any story from this series and enjoy a well-crafted mystery told from a fresh perspective that will have you coming back for more.

Another day in the park with Pat…

My favorite homicide detective, Margie Patenaude (Parks Pat) finds herself in another Calgary park with yet another dead body. What looks, at first blush, like a tragic scooter accident turns out to be something far more sinister. I love how this series never fails to provide a solid whodunnit mystery set in one of the beautiful parks in and around Calgary. While I enjoy all of the many series penned by this talented and imaginative genre-diverse author, this one stands out for the thoughtful treatment of the Indigenous peoples of Canada. The main character, Margie, is Métis and I enjoy all the insights into that culture and the challenges they face provided by Margie, her daughter, and her very wise Moushoom (grandfather). I always learn something, I always get caught up in a satisfying police procedural mystery, and I always finish each book hoping it won’t be too long before another is available.

A mystery that tugs at the heart-strings…

When a young dog-sitter is found dead in one of Calgary’s many parks, it only makes sense to call homicide Detective Margie Patenaude, aka Parks Pat, in on the case. Arriving at the scene, however, Margie is ready to sign off on the case when it appears to be a tragic animal attack rather than a homicide. As it happens, though, Margie isn’t quite comfortable with the circumstances, things just don’t seem quite right. Her investigation turns up more questions than answers and leads her on a bizarre trail that had me glued to the story. I don’t want to give anything away so I will just say that this quick read will provide a riveting story that will leave you emotionally wrung out but wanting more. I truly enjoy this original series not only for the intriguing mysteries but for the amazing settings and the wonderfully unique characters.

Kenzie is at it again!

Kenzie Kirsch, assistant medical examiner, is drawn into another twisty case when a minor celebrity goes missing and Kenzie is called out to the scene of a body dump. Could the poor woman found floating in a pond be the missing celebrity? The investigation that follows is a winding road rife with hearsay and speculation but, sadly, a dearth of definitive forensic evidence. As per usual with this series, you can expect to be taken on a journey full of surprises, you will meet some colorful characters, and, like me, you will probably be amazed at how people can react to the unexpected. I truly enjoyed this absorbing installment in what I have found to be a highly original and thoroughly entertaining series.
