We asked E L James a few questions ahead of our chat on April 3 ...

BB: Tea or Coffee?

ELJ: Coffee in the morning.
Tea in the afternoon.

BB: Cat or Dog?

ELJ: Dogs. We have two. A grumpy old Westie (Mrs. Grumpy) called Mini. And a energetic Cockerpoo puppy called George.

BB: Favourite authors/books?

ELJ: Laura Kinsale – The Shadow and The Star
Judith McNaught – too many to choose.
Catherine Coulter – too many to choose.
Brenda Joyce – too many to choose!
There are many more… but I’m running out of time as I have a plane to catch!!
Currently reading Helena Hunting’s Love on the Lake.

We asked our three romance authors "Why do you think romance is the most popular genre of fiction?"

Jeanne: Romance gives the reader what we all want ... a satisfying ending, that "happily ever after."

Angel: I think romance is often important because our heroes and heroines need something to fight for--a bigger cause, regardless of the genre. It's relatable and people connect to it.

Alessandra: I think romance is one of the most popular genres because of the emotions it elicits in readers. Everyone loves that breathless excitement of early love, and romance novels often capture and communicate this to the readers. Romance novels can also be a mini dose of drama, tragedy, and comedy - all without any real repercussions to the reader. Of all of the genres, it’s the one with the most escapism. I think that’s what really fuels its popularity.

#1 To research the book, I traveled to Tuscany for a full week of daily winery tours. I love my job! (This happened in September 2018, shortly before Covid hit the world, so I feel lucky that we made it when we did.)

#2 I write all my books in longhand with mechanical pencil and coiled notebook. Once a week, I read and dictate those pages using Dragon (a voice recognition software) which creates a Word document I can use for revisions and to submit to my publisher. There are two reasons I prefer longhand. It helps me ignore my internal editor and just write more freely. It’s also better for my neck and shoulder, as I have some issues after twenty years of writing novels and being hunched over keyboards. I try to minimize my keyboarding activities as much as possible.

#3 When I was writing scenes with Fiona’s half-brother Connor, I was also binge-watching the HBO series Succession. Kieran Culkin’s portrayal of Roman Roy helped me to imagine Connor’s appearance, dialogue, and behaviors.

#4 I graduated from high school in 1984, so I enjoyed setting a part of the book in the 1980’s.

#5 Two of the characters stay in a guest suite at the fictional winery in the book. I modeled that guest suite after the place where we stayed in Montepulciano. It was an agriturismo called Azienda Agraria Nobile.
We're looking forward to our chat with Julianne later this month.
We'd like to get some of the recipes for all that lovely food Fiona enjoys in Tuscany!
