Chapter One
Driver Fox is the most arrogant, hardcore, pain in the ass boss I’ve never met. And those attributes are his good points. The man dishes up more jaunts between Sausalito and South Hampton than his private jets can clock. I should know.
I’m scheduling his meetings with the Seacrest’s and the Zuckerberg’s of the digital world. And I’ve got the sixteen hour a day work weeks to prove it. His glossy digital magazine, Fox, is the second largest online publication on the coast. Featuring skimpy swimsuit models and racy articles like, Make Her Scream in Sixty Seconds or Less. And one best-selling health guide Her Body, Her Orgasm—a Man’s Duty. A book that Fox had written himself, a book that he was rumored to have penned on the naked backs of his many conquests. I’ve had to start double-booking his meetings to keep up with his playboy lifestyle.
I had only been working as his virtual secretary for two weeks but I noticed that he traveled to New York every weekend. Those weekends were the only time when he doesn’t work fifteen hour days at his company, Fox Regency. I don't remember the last time I slept without a text message ping or an email bomb jarring me awake in the wee hours of the morning. Which is just as well. Serving hipsters drinks in the Bay Area every night wasn’t going to get me any closer to finishing my exams. Graduating from University was supposed to be the crowning achievement of my life. I have major student loans to repay and with the amount I have to save for grad school? I’ve been happy to score any paying job I can find.
Nobody told me I was going to need to fill in for one of Driver’s secretaries. My first year’s anniversary working for him and I get ‘the call.’ “Skye Matthews, this is Aimee Slade.” She had put in a good word for me when I had to interview by phone. Aimee on-boarded me my first day. She’d given me the heads up on Driver Fox’s 'updates.' Which everyone knew were last-minute changes, with little time to get up to speed.
The hours are long, but the pay is decent. I just have to stick it out with Driver for the next couple of years. Then I can work for any publisher in the country. Interning at news and radio stations alongside my undergrad classes had made me realize journalism is my true passion.
Earning my Master's in journalism will have to wait - it takes money to get an education. I’d worn out my hands pounding on door after door to try and get my start at any news outlet or publication. I worked hard to earn it, and I'll work harder now to keep it, no matter how sleep-deprived I get.
I’m doing fine as a virtual assistant, even if the long hours make me a bit of a recluse. I'd had enough bosses try a little slap and tickle and putting up with the inter-office flirting exhausted me. Being a virtual assistant allows me to work without all the office chatter. I'll VA and keep the boss happy as long as he never crosses the line. I don’t have to spend a ton on makeup or wardrobe. And Driver Fox always spends his Sundays on the East Coast at some kind of event or another. I get away from the grunt work—and have a day to myself. And taking the ferry from Sausalito to San Fran on the weekends is always fun. Except for arranging my boss's hectic traveling, and peeking at his very public dating antics online, I never see the man.
Perfect.
