The first novel is In the Company of Thieves, in which Garza is first introduced. Tony Vining suspects that one of his customers is laundering money for a drug cartel. When he reports it to his employer, he endangers his own life and the lives of his family. Federal agents try to protect the family from the cartel, but as the threats escalate and Tony uncovers a wider conspiracy, it becomes difficult to tell whether Garza is his friend or his foe.
In the second novel, Succession, Garza wants to integrate into peaceful society after traumatic experiences in undercover law enforcement and before that, combat. But the son of a man he arrested is assembling a small army of killers to come for revenge, and a mystery surrounding the family of Garza's lover distracts him from the danger at hand. As the killers close in, the mystery unfolds to reveal a succession plan so poorly crafted that instead of producing continuity, it produces destruction.
In the final story, Once Removed, Garza's childhood friend Donny Lind's honorable discharge should put him on a road to a new life. But months later Lind awakens injured in a hospital stateside to find himself accused of kidnapping and extortion. He has no recollection of the crimes, all his memories are now jumbled and fragmented, and the evidence against him is indisputable. He flees his accusers, and when Garza learns of the accusations he embarks on a search for Donny, and the truth.
