Behind the book
My contribution to this holiday collection, The Twelve Days of Love, draws its inspiration from the carol The Twelve Days of Christmas. In the song, a lover sends twelve different gifts to his sweetheart. Luke St. Clair will present twelve gifts to Caroline, his countess, and wife of eight years.
I researched and found the book where the lyrics to The Twelve Days of Christmas were first published in 1780. It was memorized and then chanted by children at Christmastime and not set to music until 1909. I also kept with the original lyrics, which included four colly birds—colly being a regional English expression for coal-black. The earliest versions of the chant did not start with “On” and I honored that, as well.
Luke came up with some clever gifts for the woman he loves but I hope readers will find the final gift to be the best. It will also answer reader requests for what happened to Boy in my St. Clair Christmas novella Starlight Night.
